He graduated as a General Practitioner from the Autonomous University of Baja California. Moreover, he received approval from the Interinstitutional Commission for the Training of Human Resources for Health (CIFRHS), achieving 2nd place out of 1,408 candidates nationwide in the 2005 National Examination for Medical Residency Applicants (ENARM). Following this accomplishment, he specialized in Anesthesiology, training at the University Hospital of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL) in Monterrey, Mexico.
Advanced Training and Expertise
After completing his specialization in Anesthesiology, Dr. Rujana passed the selection exam to pursue a subspecialty at the General Hospital of Mexico O.D. Subsequently, he trained as a subspecialist in Pain and Palliative Care. During this period, he developed expertise as an Interventional Pain Physician and gained valuable knowledge in the therapeutic use of cannabinoids. Furthermore, he has continuously advanced his knowledge by staying up to date with the latest international guidelines in Regenerative Medicine and Cannabinoid Medicine. Notably, in 2014, he co-authored the high-specialty hospital program “Hospital Without Pain,” designed to improve pain management for all patients at Hospital Ángeles Tijuana in Baja California.
Leadership and Advocacy in Cannabinoid Medicine
Founder of a private non-profit organization advocating for medicinal cannabis in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico (2016–2018), he served both Mexican patients and U.S. residents from Southern California. Importantly, this was a binational and bicultural non-profit project that reflected a strong commitment to accessible care across borders.
Expanding Influence and Professional Engagement
Later, he co-founded the Mexican Association of Cannabinoid Therapy (AMTEC) in 2020, further promoting education and clinical standards in cannabinoid treatments. Additionally, he co-founded and serves as Medical Director of Cannavéritas Consultories, a medical and legal consulting firm specializing in Cannabinoid Therapy. Beyond that, active participation in professional organizations has been consistent. Membership in the International Society for the Study of Pain (IASP) began in 2014, followed by involvement in the American Society of Regional Anesthesia (ASRA) since 2015. These roles underscore his dedication to advancing knowledge and collaboration within pain medicine.
Professional Credentials and Academic Leadership
Active membership in the Mexican chapter of the IASP, known as the Mexican Association for the Study and Treatment of Pain (AMETD), has been maintained since 2014. In addition, certification by the Mexican Board of Algology (Pain Medicine), CONACEM, was earned in 2013, which formalized his expertise in this specialized field. Earlier, in 2009, certification was obtained from the National Certification Board in Anesthesiology A.C., establishing a solid foundation in perioperative and procedural pain control.
Commitment to Excellence and Teaching
Furthermore, in 2017, certification from the National Board of Palliative Care broadened competencies in end-of-life care and symptom management. Beyond these accomplishments, he served as Academic Secretary of the Teaching Committee of the College of Anesthesiologists of Tijuana from 2020 to 2022.
